WELCOME

Portrait by Rebecca Burleson.

In his 1862 annual message to Congress, President Abraham Lincoln described the United States of America as the “last best, hope of earth.” The story of the United States, from its creation to its use of military power and its legacy shaping the 21st-century world, is a beautiful and distinctive one. But it is also a story of challenges, disappointments, and failures. Every day, as citizens, we continue to write that story. As Lincoln said, it is we who “hold the power” and “bear the responsibility” for shaping how future generations will understand the United States and its place in the world. It is our task to ensure that American self government — the last best hope — does not, as Lincoln said on another occasion, “perish from the earth.”

The story of the United States and its military experience is the story I am committed to telling in my scholarship. It is the work to which I am committed at the United States Army Command and General Staff College, where I have the privilege to help educate field-grade officers of the US Army.
